Why Custom Cabinetry is the Heart of a Great Kitchen

The Problem with Stock Cabinets

Walk into any big-box store and you'll find kitchen cabinets in a dozen finishes and fifty sizes. They're inexpensive, they're available immediately, and they will never quite fit your kitchen. Corners get filled with awkward filler strips. Heights don't match your ceilings. Depths don't match your appliances. The wood, if it is wood at all, is often a veneer over particleboard that won't survive a decade of daily use.

Custom cabinetry solves all of this. Built to the exact dimensions of your space, from solid hardwoods or premium plywood, with joinery and hardware specified to your needs, a custom kitchen is a different category of object entirely. It is furniture, not merchandise.

What Goes Into a Custom Kitchen

At Stephen Robin Woodworking, every kitchen begins with a conversation. We want to understand how you cook, how you move, what you store, and what you love. From there, our design process involves detailed drawings, material samples, and a thorough review of every dimension before a single board is cut.

We work in a wide range of styles, from sleek, handleless modern kitchens in painted MDF or white oak, to warm traditional kitchens in cherry or walnut with period-appropriate moulding profiles. We fabricate our own doors, drawers, and face frames in our Woodstock workshop, and we install everything ourselves.

Materials Matter

The choice of wood species sets the character of the kitchen. Walnut brings warmth and depth, with a chocolate-brown grain that photographs beautifully and ages even better. Cherry lightens over time, developing a rich amber patina that gets more beautiful with every year. White oak is having a moment: its open grain and pale, cool tone suits contemporary interiors perfectly. Painted kitchens allow for any color, and we work closely with clients to select finishes that complement their tile, countertops, and flooring.

Hardware, too, makes an enormous difference. We source drawer slides, hinges, and pulls from premium European manufacturers, and install them to tolerances that ensure every drawer closes softly and every door hangs perfectly plumb.

An Investment That Lasts

A custom kitchen from Stephen Robin Woodworking is not cheap. It is, however, built to last a lifetime and often two. We have clients who come back to us decades after their original installation to add a pantry, replace a countertop, or simply to tell us that their kitchen still looks as good as the day we installed it. That's the measure of custom work.
